PEER 2 PEER IN ACTION
OCTOBER
We kicked off our 2014-2015 Peer 2 Peer group in October with a getting to know you game day. All the students had a great time, competing with each other, while playing popular games. We also spent time during the girls lunch group getting manicures.
Mid October brought the big group together for a friendly game of bowling. The students got to know each other better and learned what it takes to be a team player.
NOVEMBER
We are so grateful for our Peer-to-Peer program. This November we had a large group activity with over 120 students participating. The students completed a problem-solving activity which required communication and teamwork by all involved. We also had a turkey relay where students completed challenges in order to put a turkey together as a team. We finished off the day with a round of "Thankerchief", similar to hot potato requiring the person with the handkerchief to tell the group what they were thankful for.

DECEMBER
We started our December off with a community service project. Our students went to an Assisted Living facility to visit the residents and entertain them with holiday songs. The students learned sign language and how to play the chimes with their mentors. They had been practicing for weeks and a great time was had by all!

February
In February, we were able to meet with all of the mentors to talk about what Peer2Peer meant to them. Both the mentors and the peers were able to share what they loved about Peer2Peer. After our meeting we had a big group activity that looked at the principles of communication, teamwork and problem solving in order to get a task completed.

March
In March, we focused on the principles of non-verbal communication and how thoughts can be distorted when they do not come directly from the source. The students worked in groups to send a message down the line that was non-verbally communicated to them. It was interesting to see the outcome as the message was passed from person to person.

APRILWe ended a month full of Autism Awareness activities with a game day for our April Peer2Peer get together. The students worked in smaller groups with their mentors and got to strengthen their communication skills through natural conversation. It was fun seeing everyone's competitive side come out.

MAY
We capped off the end of the year with a trip to Greenfield Village and our annual CI Certificate of Completion Ceremony. The students were able to learn about how people lived in the olden days, ride a train, make candles, and explore all the old homes. At the Certificate of Completion ceremony our mentors were able to support our graduates as they said their final goodbye at Sterling. |
